Gus is the son of Ruffin Atkinson and Mary Margaret Stewart. He married Drusilla Pet Hatch. He married Drusilla Naoma Hatch November 28, 1900.

Gustavus Adolphus Atkinson, 82, a member of the Texas House of Representative from the Forty-Fourth District for two terms, beginning in 1922, died Sunday at his home here after five months failing health. Funeral services will be held at 2 p. m. Monday at the First Presbyterian Church Dr. L. l. MCutchen, pastor, will officiate, assisted by the Rev. Roy Cleveland, returned missionary home on furlough from Belgian Congo, Africa. Burial will be in West Hill Cemetery, directed by the Masons. Mr. Atkinson, familiarly known over Texas as Uncle Gus following his service as a legislator, served as assistant doorkeeper in the House of Representatives this year until a week before final adjournments, when his illness forced him abed. He was born at Smithfield, N.C., and came to Grayson County in 1879, after spending several years in Arkansas. He farmed near Ida for a number of years, and married Miss Pet Hatch, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. I. W. Hatch of Sherman. His wife's parents were pioneer settlers of Grayson County. Mr. Atkinson entered public life in 1900 as Grayson County Tax Assessor, being re-elected and serving until 1904. There followed twelve years as a clerk in the State General Land Office from 1907 to 1919. He returned to Grayson County to be elected to the Legislature. He had been a doorkeeper in the House since 1927. He was named Gustavus Adolphus after the Swedish King. He was succeeded in the House by Olan R. Van Zandt, present State Senator. Mr. Atkinson was a member of the Whitewright Masonic Lodge, Odd Fellows, and the Woodmen of the World. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. He celebrated his eighty-second birthday eight days ago. He is survived only by his wife. Transcribed by Carol Moore. Sherman, Texas November 12, 1939.
