Age 82, son of the late Ralph and Gertrude Scott Butler. A lifelong resident of Erie, he was a 1942 graduate of Academy High School. He drove trucks for over 40 years, retiring in 1980 from the Erie Delivery Company after 32 years service; he also worked for Abrams Storage & Hauling and Holt Transfer. He was a member of Teamsters Local No. 397. Mr. Butler was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church, and its successor, Crossroads Community Baptist Church, where he served on the Board of Deacons and the Board of Trustees for many years. He was very active in auto racing, working for several race teams on the United States Auto Club Midget, Sprint, and Indy car circuits. He attended the Indianapolis 500 for over 50 years. He was a charter life member of the Winchester Indiana Speedway Old Timers' Club, where he served on the Board of Directors. He was also a member of the National Old Timers' Auto Racing Club, Vintage American Race Cars and North American Midget Auto Racing Series.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Bette Jacobs Butler; a son, Duane Butler, and his companion, William Morris Hamilton (Lee), of New York City; daughters, Phyllis Steadman and husband, Guy, and Wendy Stolarski and husband, Tom, all of Erie; and grandchildren, Amanda and Timothy Steadman, and Megan and Abby Stolarski, all of Erie.
