Curtis was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Willie M. Patton and married to Linda.

Staff Sgt Patton began his Vietnam tour on Mar 20, 1967 and was attached to the Army's 1st Cavalry Division, 2nd Battalion, 12th Cavalry Regiment, Company B.

On Jan 31, 1968, the NVA and VC attempted to gain control of Hue. It came as a surprise and by Feb 2, the Army was ordered to attack southeast along Highway 1. They were to clear a series of hamlets en route to the city. The first was cleared easily. Liuet Col Richard Sweet was concerned because the 105 mm guns had not arrived. Bad weather and a shortage of helicopters were to blame. When they reached the 2nd hamlet, Thon Lieu Coc Thuong, they found freshly dug trenches and foxholes. About 150 troops advanced across the open and had no cover. The barrage of bullets and mortar fragments began to take its toll on the advancing soldiers.

Curtis and 21 other soldiers were killed in that encounter.
