John C. Cornelius ~ Obituary

Mr. Cornelius Found Dead

He Was a Deputy Warden at the State Penitentiary Many Years

Mr. John C. Cornelius was found dead in bed at 9 o'clock yesterday morning at his home, 1738 Oliver street.

His sister, Mrs. Milton Christopher, with whom he lived, went to his room at that hour and found him in bed, apparently asleep. She endeavored to awaken him, and failing in this, she became alarmed and sent for Dr. George F. Taylor. When the physician arrived and examined the body he said Mr. Cornelius had been dead about an hour. Death, he said, was due to heart trouble.

Mr. Cornelius had a severe hemorrhage about a week ago, and since that time had been complaining of weakness and ill health.

He retired Wednesday evening about 10 o'clock, saying he felt very sick.

For more than twenty years, Mr. Cornelius was a deputy warden at the Maryland penitentiary, having been first appointed to the position in 1865. During the term of Gen. John W. Horn as warden, Mr. Cornelius was his chief assistant. For several years past he had conducted a veterinary establishment on Monument street, near Aisquith street.

He was Fifty-three years old and unmarried.
