At the age of 14, Winfield accompanied one of his sisters to San Francisco where they resided for several years. He soon got into the lumbering business in California and neighboring territories. In 1905 he moved to Roseville with his parents and remaining siblings. There he was employed with the Southern Pacific Railroad until a few days before his death at the age of just 34. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, the Knights of Pythias, and the Order of Railroad Employees. Winfield was survived by his father and his sisters Erma, Addie, and Eva.
