From the Sunpapers on May 2, 1895: ‘Found drowned in Spring Gardens’—George F. Herbert, aged forty-three years, was found drowned yesterday in Spring Gardens, near Harman’s bridge. He had been missing from his home, 1323 Bayard Street, since April 19.

Patrolman Stump saw the body near the bridge and brought it ashore. It was removed to Mr. Herbert’s home.

Mrs. Herbert said her husband had been acting strangely for some time before his disappearance. On the night of April 19 he said he was going out for a walk. She tried to persuade him not to do so, as it was nearly midnight, but he insisted on going. As he did not return his absence was reported to the police.

Mr. Herbert kept a saloon. He leaves a widow and five children.
---------------
In the 1880 census, the family was living at 821 W. Pratt St. He is listed at age 27 as a clerk in a grocery, and born in Bavaria. His wife Mary is listed as age 20, was keeping house, was born in Cohessen (Germany), and they had a daughter Rosa, age 1, at the time.
Note: Baltimore street addresses were renumbered in 1886, so this may not match the current 60 W. Pratt St. location.
---------------
George Herbert's g-g-grandson reports that his wife Mary's maiden name may be Mary B. Effert.

There are no other names on other sides of the monument, or within the plot.
