Linus Yale, Sr., was an inventor and locksmith. He was the first mayor of the village of Newport, New York, where he had a lock shop and manufactured several different kinds of locks of his own invention.

He lived in a federal-style limestone house himself and also built the limestone Octagon House in Newport, NY, as a gift to his daughter, Chlotilda Yale Cady.
