Orrin Brown was my great great grandfather. As a young boy, he moved with his family to Herkimer County NY from Berkshire County MA. His parents were Eseck and Ruth Hunt Brown. Orrin was their only son. He had five sisters.
Orrin married about 1824 Laura L. Cady, who was born and raised in Pomfret, Windham County, CT. They had four sons and three daughters, the youngest dying as a baby.
Orrin was a large land owner in the Newport NY area. Included in his enterprises were a tannery and a cheese factory.
His oldest son, Benjamin (my great grandfather) obviously did not want to remain in Herkimer County and take over these businesses, as he went to California at the start of the Gold Rush.
Orrin's gravestone is a tall obelisk in the cemetery behind the Baptist Church in Newport. This marks his and Laura's graves, plus that of his sister, Sophia Brown Hawkins.
