Laura Cady Brown was my great great grandmother. She was born at Pomfret CT, the sixth child of Chester and Lucretia Richardson Cady.
Laura married ca 1824 Orrin Brown, who was raised in Newport, Herkimer County, New York, a long distance from Connecticut. There was another Cady family in Newport at the time, perhaps relatives of Laura's father.
The Browns raised six children to adulthood, four sons and two daughters: Anna, Benjamin, Lawrence, Ruth, Albert, and Orrin Jr. All of the sons went to California. Benjamin went in 1849 for the Gold Rush, followed by Orrin Jr. in the 1850s, Lawrence and Albert in the 1860s.
Laura was a widow for three years. The gravestone of Laura and Orrin Brown is a tall obelisk in the Newport Cemetery, behind the Baptist Church. The stone also includes the name of a sister of Orrin: Sophia Brown Hawkins.
