Barbara Elizabeth (Nelson) Hartley was born January 22, 1927 in Portland, Oregon to Helen Mossman (Ross) Nelson and Donald Orelup Nelson. She passed away January 11, 2015 in Silverton, Oregon. Barbara married Richard Davis Hartley on July 29, 1949. She was preceded in death by her husband and her brother Robert Ross Nelson (Beverly).

During her childhood, Barbara moved many places as her father was a structural engineer for Guy F. Atkinson Company and worked on many construction projects, including the Grand Coulee Dam. After her parents' deaths, she moved to Metzger, Oregon where she graduated from Tigard High School in 1945. She then attended Willamette University in Salem, Oregon and earned a Bachelor of Arts in History in 1949. She was a member of Beta Chi chapter of Alpha Chi Omega sorority, where she established life time friends. Throughout her life she always talked about the Round Robin letter that kept the sorority sisters up to date.

Barbara moved to Silverton with her husband in 1950, then they took a brief side trip to Camp Pendleton Marine base in California when Dick was reactivated as a Navy Corpsman for the Korean War. Upon their return to Silverton, she became active in the community. She was a charter member of the Evergreen Women's Golf Association in Mt. Angel, a member of United Methodist Church, and served as a volunteer leader with the Girl Scouts in the Silverton and Mt. Angel area for 26 years. She started as a Brownie Leader and later served as the Cookie Mom and Chairwoman of the Rolling Hills Association of the Santiam Girl Scout Council. Barbara loved living and raising a family in the South Center Street neighborhood in Silverton. It was a special place because of the effort of all the parents to build that community.

Her love of history continued throughout her life with her genealogy research and writing stories about her life and family. Family vacations always involved historical research on the destination. No roadside historical sign went unread. She enjoyed spending time at her favorite place, the family cabin that had been in her family since 1926. Her love of the place was transferred to her children and husband.

She is survived by sons Don (Sharon), Douglas (Nancy), Stuart (Joanne) daughter Carol (Mo) and seven grandchildren: Megan, Alissa, April (Michael Wolber), Kelly, Emily (Orion Sword), Jeffrey, Sara and two great granddaughters, Madiline and Scarlett Sword.

Memorial Services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, Jan. 23, 2015 at the Silverton United Methodist Church, 203 West Main St., Silverton, OR 97381. Arrangements by Unger Funeral Chapel.
