The exact year of birth, and State, is uncertain, but either the Betheasda Church community of York County, South Carolina, the home of his Mother's family, or Duplin County, North Carolina, the home of his Fathers family, are strong possibilities. He grew up, until about age fifteen, in Duplin County, North Carolina. (Until 1772, York County S.C. was within the state of N.C.)

About 1765, his parents, and family, moved from Duplin County, N.C., to present day Chester County, South Carolina. He, and Michael Dickson (Relation uncertain) joined a group of neighbors who were moving from Duplin County, North Carolina, to St. Matthews Parish, Georgia (Effingham County) They settled near present day Rocky Ford, Georgia, on the Ogeechee River, in present day Screven County, Georgia.

Lt. Robert Dickson died in the American Revolution, in a conflict with Tories. The date of death is from DAR records.
