Civil War Veteran Dead

Martin L. Fry, 89, Dies at Home on College Avenue
Martin L. Fry, 89, Civil war veteran and resident of Topeka the last eighteen years, died at his home, 1272 College avenue, Friday.

Mr. Fry was a member of Company H., 186th Pennsylvania volunteers, during the Civil war, and was present when Abraham Lincoln made his famous Gettysburg address in dedicating that battlefield following the war. Mr. Fry came to the west in 1869, settling in Bates county, Missouri. He was the first man in that territory to introduce the use of barbed wire. in 1914 he came to Topeka, and was state historian of the G.A.R. two terms in 1922 and 1923. He was married December 25, 1882.

Paralysis developed four years ago, and the last two years Mr. Fry has been bed-ridden. He would have celebrated his golden wedding anniversary this year had he lived. He died on the same date his mother died thirty-five years ago, and on his brother's birthday.

Surviving him are his widow, five children, Mrs. C.C. Wilson, Appleton City, Mo.; Mrs. P.E. Tyler, Parsons, Kan.; Mrs. William M. Clime, Miss Mabel Fry, Topeka; and Horace L. Fry, Spearville, and five grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Monday morning at 10 o'clock at the wall-Diffenderfer mortuary. The G.A.R. will conduct services. Burial will be in the mausoleum at Mount Hope cemetery.
