Robert joined the Confederate Navy in 1861 and served as a seaman and coxswain aboard several different gunboats that defended the Charleston Harbor and/or ran blockades, including the CSS Chicora. On 7 September 1863, the Chicora and its crew were captured. Robert was imprisoned by the Union Army for two years and was released in July of 1865. He returned to Charleston in early August of 1865.
Robert died of pneumonia.
