Funeral services for Leona Bowen, 85, of Bonham, will be held at 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, May 5, 2009 at Wise Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Brian Rayburn will officiate and burial will follow in Dodd City Cemetery. She passed away Saturday, May 2, 2009 at Hilltop Haven Nursing Home, Gunter, Texas.
Leona was born June 16, 1923 in Cordova, Alabama, the daughter of the late Jasper Ozion Gurganus and Augie Ella Meadows.
She married Horace Bowen in Hanceville, Alabama in 1940 and he preceded her in death October 5, 1986.
She was a homemaker who loved her grandchildren and enjoyed gardening. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her son, Ronald Houston Bowen, daughter, Margaret Diane Hughes, two brothers Lloyd and Harvey Gurganus and two sisters, Minnie Fleming and Tennie Bonner.
Surviving are two sons: Louis Mitchell Bowen of Jasper, Alabama and Jeff Dennis Bowen Sr. of Bonham.
Four Daughters: Dorothy Sue Pool of Midwest City, Oklahoma; Mildred Cathy Brown of Alvarado; Betty Ruth Roberts of Denison; Rita Jean Springston of Denison.
Sister: Clara Harrol of Gunter
24 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great grandchildren. A number of nieces and nephews
