Death of B. R. Steere

Roger Nelson Steere, the well known attorney, died at his residence in this city at about one o'clock this morning, of heart disease. Mr. Steere had been complaining for some time, but his friends little thought his end was so near.

Deceased was born in Providence, Rhode Island, October 12, 1888, and was consequently forty-one years and seven months old at the time of his death.

He came to Napa in 1860. After teaching school for a few years he finally located in Napa City, and in 1863 commenced the practice of law, which profession he followed up to the last. He has filled a number offices of trust, was identified with the prosperity of our city and county in various ways, and had many warm friends, who deeply regret his sudden demise.

He leaves a wife (daughter of Jesse Grigsby, Esq.) and two small children to mourn the loss of a kind husband and indulgent father.--Reporter, May 28th.

The funeral took place from the Presbyterian church, in Napa, it 2 o'clock on the afternoon of Saturday last.

Roger Nelson was born in Smithfield, RI., in the part now the city of Woonsocket, on Oct. 12, 1838 (according to Root), but 1840 according to his grave marker.

He left Rhode Island as a young man, taught in schools in Missouri, then migrated to California at about 21 years of age. He studied law, became prominent in his profession, and was the first District Attorney in the counties north of San Francisco Bay.

He settled in Napa, where he married on May 31, 1866 Rebecca Lucinda Grigsby in 1849, her lineage traceable to the first settlers in Virginia. He died in Napa at the height of his career in 1880.

From Steere Genealogy, ID #356, pg. 157 Roger Nelson Steere established a family in Napa, California. Though fairly numerous, the descendants in 1969 do not carry the name Steere in any instance. It is reported that his mother, Abigail Haskell, appears to have come from Maine, and that her mother's name was Nelson.
