Mary Anderson Hilton Ph.D., Biochemist, Distinguished Professor

Mary Anderson Hilton Ph.D. passed away peacefully on Saturday morning, September 7, 2013.

She was born July 6, 1926 in State College, PA to Edith H. and Professor Arthur K. Anderson. In this lovely college town, she was raised and educated, graduating from Pennsylvania State University with a B.S. in biochemistry in 1946. While in college, she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, Mortar Board, and Phi Kappa Phi, and held the Evan Pugh, Louise Carnegie, and Harriet Searle Watts scholarships. She began graduate studies at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY, receiving her Ph.D. in biochemistry in December, 1950. On the 27th of that month, she married Fritz Hilton of Harrisburg, PA, who she had met while at Cornell. At the time of their marriage, having served in the Navy in World War II, Fritz was a graduate student at what is now the Bloomberg School of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University. Moving to Baltimore, MD, with her husband, Mary accepted a position as research biochemist in the Department of Medicine at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. The 1950s were exciting times at Hopkins and many of Mary's colleagues were world-renowned scientists. It was a stimulating and challenging environment for a young female biochemist at a transitional time when more women were emerging in science and other fields — Mary was a groundbreaker.

In 1958, the young Hilton family moved to Louisville, where Fritz had taken a position in the Department of Anatomy at the University of Louisville School of Medicine. In 1963, Mary began her own career at the U. of L. School of Medicine as an instructor in the Department of Biochemistry. Here she remained until her retirement in 1995, having been named a lifetime Distinguished Teaching Professor. She was a passionate and demanding educator. Known as the professor with the "iron fist in a velvet glove," she was held in high regard and named "Outstanding Teacher" by a number of medical student classes. Among the student body, she was affectionately called "Ma Hilton." Her career saw her chair and organize the first course in cell biology at the medical school. She served for many years on the Admissions Committee to the School of Medicine, where she championed the acceptance of qualified women. She was also a competent and thorough scientist: she researched amino acid metabolism and developed a novel method for providing an essential amino acid in the intravenous feeding of high-risk infants.

A talented pianist and organist, Mary loved to make music and initiated all of her children into this art. She and her husband have been ardent supporters of the Louisville Orchestra for decades. In addition to being an accomplished teacher and scientist, Mary was a loving wife, devoted mother and grandmother, and friend to many. These are difficult roles to balance, but she fulfilled them all with spirit and grace. Mary will be greatly missed by her family, friends, former students, and colleagues. Her memory will live on.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents and a younger sister, Rebecca A. Morgenson.

She is survived by her husband; an older sister, Barbara A. Schick (Ed); a younger brother, Arthur K. Anderson Jr. (Anne); her four children, Victoria H. Strange, Heather E. Hilton, Ph.D. (John), Wendy B. Hilton and Fred Hilton, Jr., M.D. (Louise); six grandchildren, Emily, Karina, Nicolas, Madeleine, Elizabeth and Humberto; and eight nieces and nephews. Always the instructor, Mary chose to participate in the body bequeathal program of U. of L.'s Department of Anatomical Sciences and Neurobiology. The family will hold a memorial service on Sunday, October 20, 2013 from 1-5 p.m. at 1400 Willow.

Donations in remembrance of Mary may be made to the Mary A. Hilton Prize in Biochemistry at the U. of L. School of Medicine.
