Mr. Brownlee III was 93 years of age when he passed away after an often adventurous life.He had designed modern steel ships and studied the history of wooden ones.Graduated from Abington High Schol in 1931, he shipped as crew on two coasting schooners in 1932. He then worked as a naval architect for the John H. Mathis Co. and subsequently at RTC Shipbuilding Corp., both in Camden. At RTC he served as vice president. In 1960, he moved to head the sales division of the Wiley Mfg. Corp. in Maryland, and nine years later, he joined Express Marine, Inc. of Camden, NJ., where he was vice president for engineering and continued to work part time until well into his eighties. In retirement, he devoted much attention to maritime history, focusing on the schooners built in Philadelphia and South Jersey in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He published and spoke widely on this material.Married in 1943 to Dorothy Robertson Bruce of Philadelphia, who died in 1987, Brownlee is survived by a son David, a daughter Susan, and a grandson Michael Nally.
