As a young man he worked with his father on the family farm. He served in the United States Army from 26 June 1918 to 22 January 1919 when he was given an Honorable Discharge. When he married Beatrice Lillian McLaughlin on 20 October 1921 in Skowhegan, Somerset, Maine, he was working as a US Postal Mail Clerk for the Railroad, a job he held for thirty-seven years until his retirement in 1958. Together they had three known children.
