Charlene and her twin brother were the fourth and fifth children born to their parents. She grew up in Greenville, North Carolina, attending school there, graduating from Greenville High School and attending two years of college at East Carolina Teacher's College. On 16 February 1946, she married Arthur Lloyd Adams, Sr. of Kellogg, Iowa. They made homes in Iowa, North Carolina, Colorado, and again in Iowa over the next 36 years. Born to this union were two children, a son and a daughter.
Charlene worked a variety of jobs including nursing homes as a Care Giver and greeter at Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell, Iowa and Ankeny Funeral Home in Ankeny. Her ability to comfort and care for people was one of her greatest gifts.
