Originally born Stephen Edwin Whittier, S.E. Wait was one of Traverse City's early pioneers. In the Winter of 1851, he was hired to be a tutor for the 5-man crew aboard the schooner Madeline, which was laid up in Bowers Harbor. He operated the Wait's Pioneer Drugstore on the southeast corner of Front and Union Streets, and recorded the early history of Traverse City through photography. He also started, in 1851, keeping records of the dates when the West Arm of Grand Traverse Bay froze over and the ice totally melting.
