"Robert Grierson, my father, was born near the city of Dublin on August 23, 1789. He first came to this country when quite a young man, previous to the War of 1812. The voyage was made in a merchant trading vessel belonging to a friend of his father's family. the captain gave such glowing accounts of the United States that he induced young Robert, who was fond of adventure, to accept the invitation to visit the Republic of which he had heard such favorable reports. Having a thorough knowledge of navigation, he made himself useful in taking charge of the 'log-book', and being an excellent penman and accountant, assisted the captain in various other ways. The vessel first touched at Newfoundland, and sailed thence to Boston and New York, and afterwards coasted as far southward as Savannah, Georgia.
Delaying a few weeks at the latter port, the vessel sailed to Liverpool and thence to Dublin. the entire journey occupying nearly one year.

This visit to America filled young Grierson with a desire to return, and was no doubt the main cause of his subsequent emigration to his country....On June 4, 1815, Robert Grierson married Miss Mary Sheppard of the city of Dublin, and in a few years thereafter prevailed upon his wife - although she was devotedly attached to her friends and country - to give up all and seek with him a new home in the United States. On November 17, 1818, their arrangements were perfected and preparations made for their departure." After about a five months voyage they arrived safely in New York on April 6, 1819.
