PORTSMOUTH - Beulah Jeanette "Toots or Gigi" West, 85, of Portsmouth, passed away Friday, July 10 at the SOMC Hospice Center.
Toots was born in Portsmouth on August 4, 1929, a daughter of the late Edgar Julius and Carrie Elizabeth Haywood Riggs. Gigi was a 1948 graduate of PHS, a member of the Central Church of Christ, was a former employee of the Martings Book Store, Deemers Market and Williams Manufacturing Company. She was a former church pianist and along with her husband, they were former church youth sponsors. More than anything, she loved her family very much!
Surviving Toots is her husband, James Donald West, whom she married in Portsmouth January 20, 1950; her son, James Linward (Barbara) West of Sun City Center, Florida; her daughter, Jone Marie (Paul) Payton of Portsmouth; her sister, Virginia Russell of Holiday, Florida; her 4 grandchildren, Chris (Wendy) Payton, Marsha (Bob) Bradley, Brian (Megan) Hicks and Matt Payton; her 3 great-grandchildren, Amber Bradley and Brianne and Brayden Hicks.
She was also preceded in death by 2 sisters, Sybil Duncan and Lucille Harrison.
Graveside funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the Memorial Burial Park with Dennis Dawes, minister officiating. The family will receive friends at the RALPH F. SCOTT FUNERAL HOME in Portsmouth on Monday from 6 to 8 p.m.
