BURLINGTON - Constance E. "Connie" Stone, 93, died Friday, March 26, 2004, in the Converse Home following a brief illness, in the presence of family and friends.

She was born in Westford, Vt. on July 22, 1910, the daughter of the late Berton Alney Stone and Amy Hyde (Gale) Stone. The family moved to Essex Junction in 1915, where Connie was educated in the Essex Junction schools. She graduated from the University of Vermont in 1931 and earned a degree in library science at Simmons College. She began her career as a librarian in Jaffrey, N.H., and Washington, D.C. During World War II, Connie was a hospital recreation worker in Australia, New Guinea and the Philippines and continued her work for another year in the Philippines and Korea. From 1950 to 1969, Connie was a librarian for the U.S. Information Agency, working in Iraq, Taiwan, Ghana, Morocco and the Ivory Coast of Africa. Upon retirement in 1969, she returned to Vermont to live near family.

During her retirement years, she remained active by volunteering at the Brownell Library in Essex Junction and the Fleming Museum in Burlington. She was a member of the Friends in Council and was also an active participant in a book club. She was a voracious reader. She also enjoyed gardening and was especially fond of time spent with the children in the family.

She is survived by her three devoted nieces and their spouses, Gail S. and William Lang of South Burlington, Nancy J. and Patrick Branon of Fairfield, and Lynn and Steven Wing of Waterbury; her grandnephews and grandnieces, Jeffrey Lang, Katherine Granger, Bradley Lang, Sarah Branon-Menard, Amy Branon-Sturdevant, and Adam and Jesse Wing; and several great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews. She was predeceased by her parents; two brothers, Gale and Henry G. Stone; and her sisters, Winona Stone and Virginia (Stone) Best.

The family is grateful for the wonderful care and devotion Connie received from the staff of Converse Home during her four-year residency, Hospice, the Griswold Agency and her very special friend, Kit Wheatly.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday, March 30, at 2 p.m. in St. James Episcopal Church, Route 2A, North Gate F of the Fairgrounds in Essex Junction. Burial in Pleasant View Cemetery in Westford will take place at a later date.
