Ovens and Murray Advertiser (Beechworth, Vic. : 1855 - 1918), Thu 27 Aug 1868, Page 2, YACKANDANDAH.

Dr. Muller, the deputy coroner for
Yackandandah, held an inquest on
Saturday, on the body of James Golds-
worthy, who was killed by a fall of earth
in a bank claim, at Rowdy Flat, on
Friday.
From the particulars given in evidence
it appears that deceased and his brother
were working under a steep bank 30 feet
high, where the ground was very rotten,
and while holding the nozzle of the hose
to the ground, the bank suddenly fell
down, burying the poor fellow ; and Dr.
Muller thinks it must have killed him in-
stantaneously.
A verdict of accidental death by a fall
of earth while mining was recorded, in
accordance with the evidence.
Yesterday the funeral took place at 4
p.m. It was the most numerously at-
tended funeral seen at Yackandandah
since that of the late Mr. Twist — there
could not have been less than three
hundred and fifty persons present. De-
ceased was an Odd Fellow, and the
brethren of that order accordingly at-
tended, and after the burial service was
read, by the Rev. Mr. Groves, Wesleyan
minister, the chief officer of the Yackan-
dandah Lodge of Odd Fellows read the
usual service in accordance with the
usages of the order. The deceased
was just 21 years of age, and had been
a resident at Yackandandah the past four
years, and was deservedly respected by
all who knew him. This is the sixth
fatal accident at the same hill during the
past ten years.
