Gary Emerson Short, born July 9, 1959, age 55, of Chico, CA died July 7, 2015. He was a devoted husband, a doting father and grandfather, a mentor and friend, and an extremely active member of his community.
He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Annette Hollingsworth Short, daughter Heather Short and fiance Steven Barnes, daughter Christina Althea Short Padula, son in-law Michael Padula and grandson, William Mitchell Padula. Gary leaves behind his three sisters, Becky Short, Pam Clingerman, and Diane Clingerman, and numerous nieces and nephews, to join his parents, George and Althea Short in Heaven.

As a man of faith, he believed in eternal life and somehow had the insight to leave a letter behind for Ann. A letter that proclaimed his profound love for her and the girls, instructions on who to call and how to move forward without him, and an apology of sorts, for leaving her in that messy game called life. In his heart written words, Gary urges Ann to move on. Live on. Laugh on. Enjoy her girls, son in-law, son in-law to be, and grandson.

In one passage from the letter, Gary says, "And don't worry about me-all that stuff about Heaven, it's true and I'm loving it!" Although Gary nor his family could predict the heart attack that took his life two days shy of his 56th birthday, he somehow understood this chapter in his story was ending.

In his bigger-than-life spirit, he encourages his family to move forward, not dwell in sorrow, but cherish the great life they've shared together. And what a life they've shared. Ann and Gary's love story spans more than half of their lives, over three decades. Together they've managed to create a supportive, happy home where family is priority.

Being the family oriented man that he is, he recently invited eldest daughter Heather to join him in the business. She accepted, under the delusion that he needed a partner and although she proves to be a valuable asset to his company, what this loving father did was design a way to steal time with his daughter. Real one-on-one time that they may otherwise not have had together. Among his many glowing attributes, you could say Gary was quite brilliant too.

In fact, there isn't a lot Gary couldn't do or hasn't done. Before meeting Ann, he worked for a year in Ta'if Saudi Arabia, setting up a hospital for the King of Saudi. During his life, he was a tiger trainer for Marine World, an ambulance EMT, and a pilot for Almond Aviation.

In July of 1988, he bought his first Allstate Agency and tried his hand at Insurance. Twenty-seven years later, it turned out to be an incredible decision. His accolades are endless but some of the most prestigious are Inner Circle Winner 3 times, Leader's Forum 7 times, Hall of Fame Qualifier 4 times, Honor Ring 16 times, and National Conference 7 times.

While he succeeded in his business life, he never forgot his compassion for others. Very heavily involved in his community, Gary consistently gave back. He was a member of Rotary and served as President 2007-2008 for the Corning Rotary. He played an active role with The Boys and Girls Club, volunteering countless hours of time and in 2013, received recognition for his service. He also worked with the Chico Airport Commission and served as a member on the Chico City Council.

Although he worked hard, he always remembered to play and his thirst for the outdoors was insatiable. He loved sailing, water skiing, wind surfing, and just about any other activity that included Mother Nature. One of his greatest passions was spending time with his family at their cabin on the Rogue River, enjoying life surrounded by the ones he cherished so dearly.

In loving memory, we say goodbye, to husband, father, grandfather, uncle, brother, and friend, Gary Short. We will move on. Live on. Laugh on. But every day we will love on, with you in our hearts.

Remember, "Goodbyes are not forever. Goodbyes are not the end. They simply mean I'll miss you, until we meet again." Author Unknown
