Songwriter. He was a composer known for his many popular hit songs in the 1970s and 1980s. Educated at the University of Illinois School of Law, he left law to pursue a career in the music industry. He first came to notice with the number 1 hit "Touch Me In The Morning" (1973), which he wrote and produced for Diana Ross. In 1976, he was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song, with "Do You Know Where You're Going To", theme song from the film "Mahogany", co-written with Gerry Goffin. His contributions helped catapult artists such as Whitney Houston, Dionne Warwick, Barbra Streisand, Natalie Cole, Teddy Pendergrass and many more. His credits included "The Greatest Love of All" (1977), "Stay With Me" (1979), "Nothing Can Stop Us Now" (1981), "You Are the Love of My Life" (1985), "Didn't We Almost Have it All" (1987) and "Someone That I Used To Love" (1989). In 2002, he was awarded a star on the Palm Springs Walk of Stars and was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2007. He died at age 74 from complications of a stroke.
