John Herman Uphoff peacefully passed away on July 7, 2015 at Yankton, SD. He was born New Year’s Day 1936 at the family home in rural Ethan, SD to Herman and Pearl (Wittstruck) Uphoff. He spent much of his life in the Spencer, SD area. He also lived in Terraville, SD, Corson, SD and Salem, SD.

John attended Spencer Public Schools and married Jan McCormick in 1956. He was a farmer for most of his life. He also worked at the Homestake Gold Mine in Lead, SD and at Morrell’s in Sioux Falls, SD. He served in the SD Army National Guard while living in Terraville.

John was preceded in death by his parents Herman and Pearl, 4 sisters-Evelyn Stainbrook, Doris Johnson, Sylvia Rumbolz and Ethel Mae Bainbridge; brother-in-laws Gerald Stainbrook, Carol Johnson, Gordon Bainbridge and Kenneth Baldwin and nephews John Bainbridge and Dennis Hurm.

He is survived by his sister Gladys (Ken) Baldwin, Mitchell, SD; five sons-Martin Uphoff, Omaha, NE; James (Kathleen) Uphoff, Santa Clara, CA; John V. (Deanna) Uphoff, Council Bluffs, IA; Joseph (Kayla) Uphoff, Concord, NC and Stephen Uphoff, Wessington SD; two daughters, Margaret (Mike) Elzway of Omaha, NE and Mary (Davis) Miller of Boise, Idaho.; ex-wife Jan (McCormick) Workman Sioux Falls, SD, 14 grandsons,1 granddaughter, 4 great granddaughters and 5 great grandsons. As an only son, he was quite proud that his children and grandchildren had so many sons to carry on the Uphoff name. He is also survived by many nephews, nieces and cousins.

Visitation will be held from 5 – 7 pm on Sunday, July 12 at Kinzley Funeral Home in Salem, SD. Funeral services will begin at 10:00 am on Monday, July 13 also at Kinzley Funeral Home. Burial will follow the funeral at the Spencer SD Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Spencer Cemetery Maintenance Fund.
