Msgr. Goggin Passes; Priest for 62 Years
Msgr. John F. Goggin, 87, rector of St. Bernard's Seminary from 1932 to 1948 and writer of several articles for the Catholic Encyclopedia, died Sunday (Nov. 15, 1964) in St. Anne's Home.

Msgr. Goggin, a priest for 62 years, supervised the Star of the Sea Chapel in Edgemere Drive, Greece, from 1915 to 1957.

He was born at Palmyra, studied at St. Andrew's and St. Bernard's seminaries and won Ph.D. and S. T. D. degrees at the North American College in Rome.

After being ordained in Rome in 1902, Msgr. Goggin returned here as instructor in moral theology and dean of studies at St. Bernard's.

During Msgr. Goggin's rectorship, the courses at St. Bernard''s were registered and approved by the State Board of Regents and the seminary was permitted to grant the bachelor of arts degree.

Msgr. Goggin formerly was secretary to Bishop Bernard J. McQuaid. Regarded as an expert on church ceremonies, he was master of ceremonies at many major church services here. The articles he contributed to the Catholic Encyclopedia were in the liturgical section.

He was made a domestic prelate Dec. 1, 1932 by Pope Pius X and was elevated to protonotary Apostolic by Pope Pius XII in 1947.

Msgr. Wilfred T. Craugh, seminary rector since Msgr. Goggin's retirement, said of his predecessor:
"He was a man of rigid self-discipline and of stern countenance that belied a gentleness and deep consideration much less demanding of others. A moralist and canonist of note, he enjoyed the confidence of all the bishops of the Diocese of Rochester."

There are no immediate survivors.
