William Burk Rhoades, 91, passed away July 1, 2015 in Woodburn.
He was born to George Edward and Grace Alta (Bowers) Rhoades on Sept. 20, 1923 in Kettle Falls, Wash. The family moved to the Santiam area of Oregon in 1931. After his father’s passing they then moved to Woodburn in 1939 and he attended Woodburn High School. Burk enlisted in the United States Army in 1942 and trained as an amphibious engineer. He was honorably discharged after the war ended in 1946. He went on to telegraph school and began a lifelong career as a station agent for Southern Pacific Railroad working at various depots in the Willamette Valley. He was the last station agent to work at the Woodburn depot, where he first served.

He married Janet Margaret McCaffrey on March 18, 1956. They shared 59 years of marriage together. They made Woodburn their home, where they raised their four children. He will be remembered as a great cook and host for family gatherings and his big vegetable garden that we shared with neighbors, friends and family.

He is survived by his wife and children, sons William (Kimberley), Robert (Tracy) and Gary, and daughter Janelle (David) Hoshaw; six grandchildren, Kiger, Karah, Jabez, Zander, Hunter and TJ; his brother Timothy Rhoades; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Elsie Jamieson, and brothers, Edward, Roland, Harold and Byron.

Visitation will be from 1 to 4 p.m. July 9 at Cornwell Colonial Chapel in Wilsonville. Church services will be at 10:30 a.m. July 10 at Woodburn United Methodist Church. Graveside services will be at Willamette National Cemetery with military honors at 1 p.m. July 14. Memorial contributions may be made in his name to Shriners Children’s Hospital or the Woodburn United Methodist Church.
