Judge. While an infant his father was killed in the defense of a blockhouse, which was being attacked by indians. He studied law at Lexington Kentucky, in the office of Henry Clay. Practiced law at Carrollton Kentucky where he married Elizabeth Masterson. In 1810 he moved to Indiana Territory. In 1811 he was appointed prosecuting attorney of Dearborn county by Governor William Henry Harrison. In 1814 he represented the county in the territorial legislature and was president of the legislative council and in the same year was appointed by Governor Posey judge of the second judicial circuit of the territory. On the admission of the state to the Union, was appointed by Governor Jonathon Jennings one of three supreme judges for Indiana and remained on the bench for fourteen years. In 1831 was defeated for United States senator by one vote. In 1834 was appointed by President Andrew Jackson judge for the district of Indiana.and held that office until his death. He laid out the city of Aurora and was active in establishing Franklin College.
