Scott A. Butler, of Carrollton, GA, passed away Wednesday, July 8, 2015 after a brief illness, surrounded by his family. He spent his last evening with his beautiful wife, Joy, eating dinner, relaxing, and watching his beloved Atlanta Braves.
Scott was born June 20, 1944 in Portland, OR, five minutes after his beloved twin brother, Craig. He spent his childhood years in Germany and Columbus, GA before settling in his hometown of Manchester, GA. Scott graduated from Manchester High School in 1962, and loved telling stories of his time as a Manchester Blue Devil, where he was class president and played baseball and basketball.
Scott attended Georgia Southwestern College for two years, playing baseball and basketball. His athletic and academic careers continued at West Georgia College in Carrollton, GA, where he met the love of his life, Joy Burson, in 1964. Scott’s lifelong love of sports led to a career as a high school baseball and basketball coach, which he began after marrying Joy in 1965 and graduating from West Georgia in 1966.
Scott spent his early career at several schools, including Villa Rica High School, where he coached the Wildcats to a Region Championship in baseball at age 22. He also taught history and coached championship teams at Gordon Lee High School in Chickamauga, GA and Central High School in Carrollton, GA.
As his career in education blossomed, Scott and Joy welcomed three sons into their home. Steven, Scotty, and Ben grew up in a wonderful home, where they learned to live, love, give and compete. Scott never missed an opportunity to teach or coach his sons, and became the guiding influence in their lives. The lessons he taught continue to affect his sons, and are passed along daily to Scott’s seven grandchildren.
Scott made education a priority for his family. He took great pleasure in sending his sons away to college, Steven to the United States Military Academy, Scotty to Samford University and Auburn University, and Ben to Georgia Tech and Duke University. In addition to their academic instruction, Scott also insisted on a robust spiritual education. As a long-time member and Deacon at Smoke Rise Baptist Church, Scott taught Sunday School for over 25 years.

In 1971, Scott moved his growing family to Atlanta and began a 36-year career with DeKalb County Schools. He was fortunate to spend time at many schools over the years, and especially enjoyed his time at Towers High School and Stone Mountain High School. In 1977, Scott became the assistant principal at Tucker High School, a relationship that would span decades as he moved through the DeKalb School system. His passion for Tucker never waned, and provided a capstone to his career when he returned to Tucker in 2001 as the Principal.
Upon their retirement in 2007, he and Joy moved home to Carrollton and he began a second career with the University of West Georgia. He worked in the School of Education as the Director of Field Experience, working with all student teachers. He had such a passion for education and greatly enjoyed this opportunity to “teach teachers how to teach.” He was recognized as “Faculty Member of the Year” by the UWG Student Government Association in 3 of his 6 years of service. He was a beloved instructor for those students who many described as the “best professor they’ve ever known.”
He was a faithful member of Tabernacle Baptist Church and proud volunteer for the Open Hands United Christian Ministry providing food and essentials to those in times of need. He was an 8 year member of the Rotary Club of Carrollton and inducted into the club by his son, Ben. He had a heart for others and would do anything to help anyone. Family was the most important thing and he spent his life with his sons, grandsons, and granddaughter on the playground, basketball court, and athletic fields. His advice to live by: “We do not stop playing because we grow old, we grow old because we stop playing.”
In over forty years in education, Scott Butler touched the lives of tens of thousands of students, teachers, coaches and parents. He considered the success of his students – in the classroom, on the athletic fields, and in life – to be his greatest accomplishment.
He is survived by his wife and the love of his life for 49 years of marriage: Joy Burson Butler of Carrollton, his three sons: Steven (Jill) Butler of Marietta; Scott (Emily) Butler II of Franklin, TN; and Ben (Kirby) Butler of Carrollton. Grandchildren: Cadet Jack Butler, West Point NY; Joe Butler, Jeb Butler, Judson Butler, Judge Butler all of Franklin, TN, Gavin Butler of Marietta, and his beloved first granddaughter nicknamed “girlfriend” Campbell Winn Butler of Carrollton. Brother: Brother Campbell Butler of Jasper, Twin Brother Craig (Sally) Butler of Atlanta GA; Brothers in Law John (Barbara) Burson III and J. Ronald Burson of Carrollton; dear Aunt Sara Winn of Manchester; and lifelong friends Fred and Ruth Foster of Covington, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and other family members.
He was preceded in death by his parents, MSG Yancey and Margaret Butler and Mr. John Henry and Jewell Burson, Jr.; a sister, Mrs. Meredith Buffington and sister in law, Mrs. Carole S. Burson.
A celebration of life service will be held at Tabernacle Baptist Church in Carrollton on Saturday, July 11 at 2:00 pm with Rev. Ernie Forrester and Rev. Glenn Dyer officiating. The body will be cremated according to his wishes. Memorial contributions may be made by friends to the Scott Butler Scholarship Fund for Tucker High School at any Bank of North Georgia location. These funds will be used to support the students and mission of Tucker High School.
