Please Note: Eli’s obituary, which has been transcribed below, gave his birth date as March 5, 1917. Both the obituary and funeral notice gave his age as 3 years. According to Eli’s death certificate, which may be seen in familysearch.org, he was born March 5, 1918. Eli’s age on the 1920 Census for Ottumwa, Iowa, which was enumerated on January 15, 1920, was age 1. In looking at the actual census, it also appears that there were some months added onto age 1, perhaps 9, but I can't read the number clearly. If Eli was one and 9 months old on January 15, 1920, the birth date on the death record would be more accurate. For the purposes of this memorial, I am using Eli’s birth date on his death record. I have transcribed the obituary as written.
Also, Eli's name was spelled Ely on his death record. I believe that Eli was the correct spelling.
