1934 was a hard year in rural Nevada county in southwest Arkansas. The great depression had taken hold of the economy and the lives of the people. Money was in short supply in most households, and the same was true of the Jess and Lossie Sandifer family. Frank was 14 years old, and his main interest was baseball. He wanted a real baseball glove, but he had to settle for a home-made one. Jess planted some watermelons, and when they got ripe, they piled them high in the back of a neighbor's truck and headed for Hope to sell them for cash. Frank rode in back on top of the watermelons. About 2 or 3 miles north of Falcon the truck was going down a steep hill, and it suddenly ran off the road into the ditch and turned over. Frank was thrown out of the back of the truck and into the bank on the far side of the ditch. He was alive, but his neck was broken. They took him to the hospital in Magnolia, Arkansas, where he passed away the next morning.
