Well known and beloved character of Ipswich, Lewis Kilborn, or "Uncle Lew" as he was known, was the last resident of nearby Grape Island and lived there for most of his life. After his father, John D. Kilborn, died in 1946, Lewis lived alone on the island and was sometimes referred to as the "Hermit" of Grape Island, though to all those who knew him he was hardly a hermit and enjoyed the company of friends and family when they came to see him.
