Wilhelm (or William) was born in Sweden. He and his parents immigrated to the United States in 1888. He married Rena Koksma, originally from the Netherlands, on January 18, 1902. They had one child, Wilma. William died of tuberculosis before Wilma's birth. Rena died the following year, "of a broken heart", according to Wilma. Baby Wilma was then raised by her mother's family.
