Seth Wood Jr. was a skilled silversmith and pewterer, having completed apprenticeships in Newport, RI with the famed master craftsmen, Thomas Arnold and Daniel Rogers, after which he settled in Providence, RI. While in Providence, he happened to meet several seafaring members of the Italian/Jewish Bosco family from whom the Wood line descends. After receiving a living inheritance from his father, Seth soon removed to Douglas, MA to enter a business partnership with Caleb Parmenter, the husband of his mother's first cousin, Elizabeth (Rounds) Parmenter. While in Douglas, he met and married Polly Briggs, niece of Caleb Parmenter. Within several years, the young couple followed other family members to Vermont, where Seth continued to work in smithing and land speculation. Seth was raised in the Congregational faith but became a passionate Unitarian deacon and lay preacher later in adulthood.
