Article from the Castroville ANVIL, September 21, 1894:
"Mr. August Geyer
At his home near Idlewild on the lower Medina below Castroville in his 59th year, Mr. August Geyer last Thursday afternoon was engaged in mowing when the machine became clogged. He cleaned out the bar, and a rattlesnake that had been cut up by the machine, causing it to be clogged, bit him in the hand near the upper artery. He immediately sucked the wound and left for home where chickens, etc., were applied and a doctor sent for but to no avail. Saturday morning the deadly poison had its effect and he breathed his last amidst intense suffering. The deceased was an old resident of Castroville, having settled here many years ago, where he was engaged in blacksmithing, which he pursued in connection with farming at the time of his death. He was born in Rudolstadt, Germany, on the 13 April 1836. He reared a large family of children, 6 boys and 6 girls, of whom 10 are alive, 4 boys and 6 girls, and who, with their Mother, survive him. Mr. Geyer was kind and amiable in his disposition and made friends of all with whom he became acquainted. He was respected and esteemed for his sterling integrity and upright conduct in his intercourse with his fellow man. His dying wish was that the Lodge should perform the burial services at the grave. His remains were interred on his farm Sunday evening, September 16, 1894, where a large number of his family, friends, and neighbors were congregated. A large number of his Brother Knights of Honor being present when Richard Tuerpe acted as Marshal, August Hornung as Dictator, and C. H. Frick as Chaplain. The ANVIL in common with the entire community extends its sincere sympathy to the family" (Mann Family History, p. 133).
