According to notes of Georgia Elsa (Myers) Steele:
In 1861 six families moved from NC. They were: Jones, Wittlock, Kenny, Fowler, Sowders and Cantrell. Took up a claim in Bentonville AR. After raising one crop, the chills and malaria fever were so bad they moved. The family settled 40 miles from Rolla MO and homestead 160 acres. According to his grandson, John Willie Cantrell. [Note, the 1860 census places this family in Alabama. However, the youngest child was age 2 and born in GA. It appears the move west began before 1860.]
