Born in Smithdale, Mississippi, in 1921, Mrs. Ellis was the older of two sisters in a family of four, and grew up on a dairy farm. She loved to play the piano and, as a young girl played for the 8th grade graduation. She was in the glee club and was an assistant pianist at her family church. From age 14 to age 16 she wrote the community news column for the Summit Sun in Summit, Mississippi. In 1939 at 17 years old she graduated, and entered training at the Jackson Infirmary Hospital, where she graduated, passed the State Board, and in September, 1942, became a registered nurse.

In June of that year she married the love of her life, Cecil Bay Ellis. In 1953 the happy couple adopted their daughter, Dianne, and a year later, Bob. They were brought up in a Christian home. Mrs. Ellis was involved in a number of civic clubs and also a Brownie and Girl Scout leader. She enjoyed swim meets, band trips, football and church activities with her children and grandchildren.

Mrs. Ellis worked many years in supervisory and administration nursing services. In 1983, after 45 years, she retired. In 1992 the Jackson Infirmary School of Nursing conducted a reunion, and dedicated a plaque at the St. Dominic Jackson Memorial Hospital with her name included among all the names of the original nurses.

She was a longtime member of Broadmeadow United Methodist Church in Jackson, Mississippi; the charter member of the Mississippi Hospital Association Society for Nursing Service Administrators; a member of the Jackson Infirmary Alumni; Mississippi State Nursing Association; District 13 Nurses Association; American Nurses Association, and the Magnolia Chapter of the Good Sam Club.

Mrs. Ellis loved to travel with her husband, Cecil, and toured the United States and Canada by recreational vehicle. She always loved her trips to Texas to visit her daughter’s family, which includes grandchildren and a great grandchild. She lived in the happy companionship of her husband, Cecil Bay, for 65 years.

Mrs. Ellis loved birds, football, animals and always read her bible (which she rebound twice) every day. She enjoyed playing hymns on the piano and singing. Her daughter-in-law, Cindy, was very special and the family wishes to thank her for all her love and help through the last ten years.
