Statesman. A native of Horta, Azores, Portugal, Arriaga, served as the first President of Portugal from August 24, 1911 to May 24, 1915. He also served as an Elected Deputy of the Republican Party for the Island of Madeira from 1882 to 1892, and as a Member of the Portuguese Republican Party.He was a lawyer, teacher, writer and politician of Azorean origin. A great speaker and a prominent member of the doctrinaire generation of Portuguese republicanism , he was a leader and one of the main ideologists of the Portuguese Republican Party . The 24 of August of 1911 became the first president-elect of the Portuguese Republic , succeeding in the head of the State to the Provisional Government presided by Teófilo Braga. He held those duties until May 29, 1915, when he was forced to resign and was replaced in office by the same Teófilo Braga.
