Ellendale, N.D. - Funeral service for John D. "JD" Crabtree, 87, of Ellendale will be 10 a.m. Thursday, July 13, 2006, at Presbyterian United Methodist Church, Ellendale. Burial will be in Ellendale City Cemetery with military graveside rites by Herman Schlinker Post #137. There will be a Masonic service Wednesday at 7 p.m. and visitation will be 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home.

He died July 9, 2006, at Ellendale. John D. Crabtree, son of Dwight and Mable (Geer) Crabtree, was born Oct. 21, 1918, at Ellendale. This is where he was raised, graduating from Ellendale High School with the Class of 1936. He attended State Normal and Industrial College in Ellendale, graduating in 1940 with a bachelor of science
with a major in industrial arts.

He taught and coached for one year each at Heron Lake and Kasson, Minn.

In 1942, he joined the Navy Air Corp, where he served in the South Pacific. In 1945, he was honorably discharged.

He was united in marriage to Sylvia Krapu on July 1, 1945, in JD's parents' home at Ellendale.

He began working for his father at his Insurance and Real Estate Office. In 1950, he purchased the business following his father's death. Following his successful election as a state legislator in 1977, he semi-retired and in the late 1990s he retired.

JD enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, gardening and piloting his own airplane.

He was a member of Presbyterian United Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge #13, El Zagel Shrine, Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion. For over 25 years he had been the leader of Boy Scout of America Troop #132 and was a three term state representative in District #26 from 1977-1983. He was past president in 1962 of North Dakota Independent Insurance Agents and past rural fire chief.

Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Deann (Earl) Gall of Ellendale; five sons, Grant Crabtree of Ellendale, Bruce (Vicky) Crabtree of Mandan, Dwight (Correen) Crabtree of Bismarck, Tom (Joyce Mehaffey) Crabtree of Aberdeen and Gene (Julie) Crabtree of Minot; 13 grandchildren; and 12 great-grand- children.
