“Rev. Nicholas Purefoy spent a great portion of his ministry in the town of Warrenton, NC. He opened an academy while there which became the basis for the local school system. His home still stands and was restored to it’s original beauty and style in the early 2000s. It is a Bed & Breakfast today called ‘The Purefoy House’.” It is believed by most of the family that Nicholas Purefoy was buried in Warren County in a family cemetery of his wife. However, the exact location of this cemetery is not known. (Information from Robert C. Peurifoy, FAG member #46928811)
Son of John Purefoy and Mary Fort; Professed faith and connected himself to the Cross Roads Church, 1829; Graduated from Columbian College, Washington, DC, in 1840; Married India F. Watson in 1850; Pastored at Tarboro, Greenville, Fayetteville, Warrenton, Browns, Gardners, Perry’s Chapel and Bear Swamp; Funeral preached by R. T. Vann (From his obituary in The Biblical Recorder, Wednesday, July 14, 1886 - Page 2 and News and Observer, Thursday, July 8, 1886 - Page 4)
The Biblical Recorder presents his full name as “Nelson Addison Purefoy,” but the same obituary as it appears in the minutes of the Central Baptist Association gives only “Nicholas,” as does his marriage bond. In most records, he is simply “N. A.”
