Robert was the husband of Jan E. Tully of San Diego CA and the son of Rita Tully of Arlington and CWO Robert E. Tully USA. SSgt Tully was a Marine Corps veteran with over twelve years of service having lastly re-enlisted on January 31 1968. He arrived in Vietnam on September 19 1967 and was assigned to duty with Company I, 3d Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

While on patrol moving though tall grass south of Hill 55 in THE DODGE CITY area of Dai Loc District a BT (Booby Trap) was tripped which causing the detonation of what may have been a 105 mm artillery round rigged as an SFD (Secondary Firing Device). The explosion killed three Marines and wounded eight who were evacuated. One of the casualties was SSgt Tully who was killed as a result of mulitple fragmentation wounds.

* SSgt Robert Edward Tully was presented with the BRONZE STAR Medal with Combat "V" while serving as a Platoon Sergeant "For heroic achievement ....on 8 November 1967...."
