Barbara E. 'Barb' Knutson
Barbara Ellen Knutson passed away Dec. 8, 2012, at the Hospice Care Center after a 21-year battle with breast cancer.
She was born in Seattle to Wally and Hemmie (Iverson) West in 1932 and married Melvin A. Knutson in 1952. The couple settled in Packwood, Wash., where they raised their four children.
Barb was active in her adopted community, where she drove a school bus for several years and retired from PLS/Cowlitz Stud Co. after 24 years. In 1999, Barb and Mel moved to Longview, and Barb volunteered at PeaceHealth for nine years.
A smiling, loving friend, neighbor, coworker, mother, grandmother and sister, Barb was known for her kind and generous nature. Everyone in her close circle of acquaintances knew her as "Mom".
Barb was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Mel in 2001; and a son-in-law, Michael McCoy.
She is survived by four children, Kaye McCoy of Longview, Kyle (Alice) Knutson of Shelton, Wash., Kevin (Valerie) Knutson of Myrtle Creek, Ore., and Kim (Denning) Jackson of Rainier; two brothers, Walter (Vivian) West of Lake Forest Park, Wash., and Vincent (Gloria) Kuhnhausen of Mill Valley, Calif.; 13 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
A graveside service is planned for noon Monday at Packwood Cemetery. A celebration of Barb's life will follow at 2:30 p.m. at the Packwood Senior Center. All are welcome. The family will announce a memorial service in Longview at a later date.
