Judge E. Leroy Van Roden was born in Philadelphia on June 12, 1892, and was graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Law School in 1915.

He was admitted to practice in the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania and the courts of Philadelphia County on February 15, 1915. Judge van Roden was admitted into Delaware County Courts in 1916.

He served two years and five months in the 79th Division during World War I. He still holds his Army Reserve commission and last year was promoted to the rank of bridadier general (ret.) in the Pennsylvania National Guard.

After World War I, Judge van Roden resumed his law practice in Delaware County; he served as assistant district attorney from 1920 to 1925 and from 1936 to 1940.

He returned to active Army duty in World War II in 1942. He served until 1946, taking part in the Normandy invasion on D-Day. He was awarded numerous medals, including the French Croix de Guerre avec Palmes. After the war, the judge took part in the war crimes trials in Nuremberg, Germany.

Judge van Roden was elected president judge of the Delaware County Common Pleas Court in 1945; reelected for a second ten-year term commencing in 1956 and for a third term in 1965.
