His mother died when he was a year and a half, and he was raised by his, stepmother, Stella Black Worsham, who loved him dearly. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and was present during the bombing of Pearl Harbor. He married Jean Gorse in Massachusetts in 1945. They had five children, Phyllis, Richard, Stephen, David and Dennis. He retired from the U.S. Navy in 1960, and became an Associate Engineer at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.) in 1961. He died at the age of 53.
