Samuel M. Baird was married twice. He married Francis Sarah (Fannie) Harris in Madison County, Illinois on Mar. 5, 1829. They were parents of 8 children: Martha, Mary, William, Jane, John, Margaret, Samuel F. and Sarah Baird. Fannie died Sep. 3, 1846.

Samuel then married Almeda V. Botkin in Bond County, Illinois on Jan 23, 1849. They were the parents of 4 children: George, Elizabeth Ellen, Thomas and Nancy A. George and Nancy died in infancy; Nancy died just 13 days after her father.

Samuel's sons William and John both served with the 9th Illinois Infantry in Company I during the Civil War. Both were injured twice. His son Samuel served with the 117th Illinois Infantry and died less than a month after being discharged with disability in 1863.
