Samuel then married Almeda V. Botkin in Bond County, Illinois on Jan 23, 1849. They were the parents of 4 children: George, Elizabeth Ellen, Thomas and Nancy A. George and Nancy died in infancy; Nancy died just 13 days after her father.
Samuel's sons William and John both served with the 9th Illinois Infantry in Company I during the Civil War. Both were injured twice. His son Samuel served with the 117th Illinois Infantry and died less than a month after being discharged with disability in 1863.
