Wetterman, April Renee
Celebration of Independence Day darkened starkly on Monday for Renee Wetterman's family. Responding to a 9-1-1 call on July 4, local police found Renee, age 24, in her beloved monster truck where she had apparently abruptly died on Sunday. Cause of death is not presently known.

Christened April Renee Wetterman on June 3, 1981, by her mom and dad, Mary Nell Baird and Ron Wetterman, Renee lived her earliest years with her parents and older sister, Carrie, in Goldtwaithe, Texas. The family moved to Midland in 1984.

Renee grew up a happy child full of vitality and a sharp wit. She would always tell you directly what she thought, whether you cared to hear her or not. She attended Henderson, Anson Jones, and Emerson Elementary schools as she tracked her way through the MISD cluster system. She served her time at Goddard Junior High before her high school years as a purple and gold bulldog at Midland High School. Renee graduated, with honors, from MHS in May, 1999. Renee earned her Associate's Degree from Midland College, with honors, in December 2001.

In the years after completing her academic studies, Renee worked in the business offices of Hamilton Optical, Control Power, & Hy-Bon where she displayed a quick understanding of the intricacies of both staff and customer relations keeping everyone happy by always accurately processing the paper and bookkeeping demands of the businesses. Renee was forced to scale back her full-time employment to part-time employment and service activity. A serious car accident during her 18th year left her with chronic pain that swept over her in varying intensities. Thus, Renee shifted to substitute teaching on occasion for Midland ISD and served as a Big Sister in the Big-Brothers/Big Sisters adult mentoring program.

Renee's brief life was not all school and work. During her high school years she discovered Alpine skiing and fell in love with sliding down the high mountain slopes over the brilliant, powdery, white fresh fallen snow. Even in recent years she would still ski when she could, taking a "devil may care" attitude toward the chronic pain interludes that those around her, including her doctors, told her meant she should give up skiing. Renee gathered always around her a circle of good friends. She loved conversation with her friends and would often be found in their company. Renee loved to dance as her friends quickly learned.

More important than all her school, work, friendships and recreational activities, her family will remember the love Renee expressed. Renee and her sister Carrie were close. Renee could tell Carrie her deepest secrets, fears, and hopes. Renee loved her Dad and her Mom. Her mother, Mary Nell Baird, works nights as a Registered Respiratory Therapist at the Rehab Hospital. Renee would just walk in and surprise Mary Nell in the middle of the night to see her Mom, hug her, and catch up on the latest news while her Mom was on break. Renee loved her 5-year old nephew, Hunter Barker, and proved to be the sternest disciplinarian in the family to see that Hunter did what he was supposed to do. Renee will be remembered by her family, most of all, for her life of love for them and the ripples of that love outward to all those that she knew.

Immediate family members surviving Renee include her dad, Ron Wetterman; her mother Mary Nell Baird; her sister, Carrie Lee Wetterman Barker; her nephew, Hunter Allen Barker, all of Midland; and her niece Ruby Ileana Bonham of Andrews, TX. Also surviving Renee are her maternal grandparents, Melba and Bobby Baird of Mullin, TX; numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins, hailing from Mills County, TX, and the DFW metroplex; her boyfriend, Brandon Kemper of Midland; and friends, too numerous to name them all, but including her closest girl friends Kacey Hyatt and Sheryl Buck, also of Midland.

Renee leaves us, as her family and friends, all devastated and heartbroken. She leaves us with enough incredible memories of our times with her to span the remainder of our lives till we see her again in Eternity. To Renee: We love you always. We will miss you till we meet you again where you are now. We will cherish our memories of you, of your strength, of your courage, and most of all of your generous and loving heart. We take comfort in that aspect of our faith that knows where you are now for you stand in a place with God beyond our wildest ability to imagine. There, with Him, you shed no tears and live happy, healthy, in and with all that is good, true, and beautiful. We can just imagine the look of surprise on God's face, the first time you tell him what you think when you think He should do something different. We are already smiling at that mental image.

Memorial services for Renee were held on Friday, July 8, at the Stonegate Christian Fellowship, 6000 West Wadley Avenue, Midland.

For those so inclined, remembrance gifts may be sent either to the Baptist Crisis Center, 806 South Baird Street, Midland, 79701 or to Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Midland, 1007 West Texas Avenue, Midland, 79701.
