Bertha Bender, 87, died June 30, 2015, at a Mandan care center. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 8, at Peace Lutheran Church, Lincoln, with the Rev. Kevin Nelson officiating. Burial will be held at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan.

Bertha Alvina Knapp was born Aug. 27, 1928, in Linton, to John and Rose (Scheafer) Knapp. She attended school in Hazelton.

She married Frank Bender in Hazelton. She loved playing piano, dancing, and spending time with family and friends.

She is survived by her sons, Paul (Sharon) Irvin, Douglas (Melody) Irvin and Terrance (Elaine) Irvin; two grandsons, five great-granddaughters; and a special niece, Julie.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank W. Bender; her son, Timothy H. Irvin; her parents; her brothers, John, Adolf, Theodore, Edward, Otto and Emil; and her sisters, Martha, Sarah, Rose and Emilia.
