Although the B.C. archives (transcription) name his father as John R. Booth, other sources closer to the time give his name as John P. Booth. His birthplace is noted in these archives (transcription from handwritten) as "Ross Island", but this should be listed as at Noss Island which was where his family had lived in the Shetland Islands. A letter to Canada from Noss Island is held in the collection of M. I. Pirie. John Paton Booth's grandfather was Joseph Booth (1763ca - 1847) who is thought to be buried at Bressay Island at Cullingsbrough churchyard in Scotland. His niece, Mary Robieson Pirie, of Dundas, Ontario, travelled to visit and sketch the grave in the early 1900s. His grandmother was Ann Watson (1780c - 1874). According to "The Aberdeen Journal", Wed. August 22nd, 1832, Issue 4415, Joseph Booth was living at the farm of "Mains of Park" in the Parish of Lonmay. The notice in this paper was to announce that this property was available to let (rent).
Biographical notes by Marika I. Pirie, great great grand-daughter of his sister Jane Booth.
